Each participant is given a sophisticated pedometer which has a USB port to allow the data to be uploaded via a PC to the website. This allows us to track our personal and team progress.
The move of office means an easy 25 minute walk to work for me which clocks up 3500 odd steps one way before settling down at my desk. Brisk walks at lunch time, taking the stairs, not the lift and owning a dog all helps to reach target. Cycling and swimming counts too.
The six week period over which my colleagues and I are undertaking far more walking than we envisaged possible in a working week is a great team building experience. One group (the original one) is well ahead of the other (which gives rise to healthy competition). It’s got us all talking, comparing steps and most importantly undertaking group walks we wouldn’t otherwise do. The short winter days and weather could be a disincentive but with the right gear on, we brave some of the quite hideous weather experienced recently.
As a group we are raising funds for the annual Handicamp weekend. Every year since 1986 Woking District Scouts have organised and run a weekend camp at Woodlarks Campsite, near Farnham to give children with Special Needs from the Woking area a chance to try typical Scouting activities. Explorer Scouts are ‘buddied’ with Special Needs children on a one to one (or two to one if necessary) basis and work together in Patrols for the whole weekend. Check out their promotional video at
It is truly inspiring. We felt this chosen charity was an especially good fit for what we were doing – working together, supporting each other and being active. Woking Scouts need to raise£8,000 annually to keep Handicamp going.
Please donate to this worthy cause. This isn't a one day endurance event like a marathon; this is a six week event where we are challenged to achieve 10,000 steps a day for the full duration of the event. Tough yes, but the effect on our lifestyle is already visible. As a sponsor you will be supporting a little known local Woking based charity and at the same time provide the carrot that drives and motivates me and my work colleagues to do the daily activity.
If you would like to be a sponsor, please tell me the maximum sponsorship you would be prepared to pledge for the whole 6 week scheme. I will contact you at the end (or give you regular updates if you’re interested) to let you know how we got on.
